Hawthorn Green's Dorothy Celebrates Her 100th Birthday With Tiara And Pearls

A tiara, pearls and a giant cake were the order of the day when Dorothy Smyth opened her special card from the Queen on her 100th birthday.

Dorothy, also known as Dot, who lives at Hawthorn Green Care Home, was able to catch up with friends from her East London church group and swap memories to mark the celebration.

Dorothy, who became famous for her home-made apple pies when she was a regular at Bethnal Green Mission Church, Cambridge Heath Road, enjoyed her birthday with friend Patricia Davis, Rory Pagel Wilks and her priest Michael Houston.

Rory said: “I have known Dorothy for many years, she was at my wedding and we look at Dorothy as a grandmother to our three children.”

Dorothy who never had children of her own, learnt her baking skills from her mother who she always loved helping at their home.

On her big day at our Stepney Green care home, her carers presented Dorothy with a dress, tiara and pearl bracelets and necklace.

Wellbeing and Lifestyle Coach Farzana Khatun said: “Before the party Dot was able to reconnect with her friends and her Priest, which was wonderful to see as they are so important to her.

“She looked beautiful in her pearls and tiara – in fact, we all thought she looked like the Queen.

“Celebrating a 100th birthday is such an incredible achievement, and we feel honoured to have been able to help Dot have a special day.”

As well as remaining an active member of her church, Dorothy enjoys listening to music and is a keen member of the arts and crafts club at the home.
