Devoted couple John and Janet Hammond marked an incredible 72 years of marriage at a joyful family celebration thrown by their care home.
The Hammonds both live at Templeton Place Care Home on Hurst Way, and have four children, 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Family members joined the couple to celebrate their impressive milestone, and they shared memories of getting married in 1954.
Janet, aged 95, said: “It was love at first sight for us all those years ago. John has always been particularly attentive, and we’ve had a wonderful marriage, which is still going strong!”
John, aged 98, added: “The secret to a long marriage like ours is love, attentiveness and putting each other first. We’ve had a lovely time looking back over so many happy years and celebrating with our family.”
The couple were joined by their children Jane, Richard and Anne plus daughter-in-law Briony and son-in-law David at Templeton Place where they enjoyed a celebration lunch in the home’s private dining room.
They were thrilled to receive congratulations from King Charles and Queen Camilla, who sent a card to the couple.
Home Manager Kay Mitchell said the team at Templeton Place felt privileged to host such a special occasion.
Kay said: “It’s been incredibly moving to see John, Janet and their loved ones celebrating such an amazing milestone. They are truly devoted to each other, and their love has stood the test of time.
“It’s incredible to think how much has changed over seven decades, but their commitment to each other has never wavered.”
