Eastleigh Walking Football Squad Brings World Cup Spirit to Alston House

Eastleigh Walking Football Squad Brings World Cup Spirit to Alston House

Residents at Alston House Care Home on Leigh Road enjoyed a visit from Eastleigh FC Walking Football Club, as football, fitness and World Cup spirit came together for a lively afternoon at the home.

Players from the club visited Alston House to deliver a walking football session, share simple fitness movements and talk to residents about the benefits of staying active in a safe and enjoyable way.

During the visit, residents also learned more about the club’s Mobility and Parkinson’s Squad, which supports people living with Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, those recovering from heart attacks or strokes, and people rebuilding confidence after injuries.

The squad explained how walking football can be adapted for different abilities, helping people improve mobility, confidence and social connections while still enjoying the fun and familiarity of the game.

For resident Raymond Phillips, 89, the visit brought back fond memories of his own footballing days. Raymond, a former Pirelli FC player, was once known on the pitch as “Cutter” because of his speed and agility.

He said: “This has made me think about my own time playing football and the thrill of scoring goals. It’s been great fun to see football played here at Alston House.”

Squad manager Fiona Wingent said the club is passionate about making football accessible to more people.

She said: “Walking Football is fine for the older generation who are fit for their age, but we are taking it a stage further by running sessions for those less able.”

The visit gave residents the chance to talk about favourite teams, famous matches and footballing heroes from years gone by, while also picking up a few fitness tips from the visiting squad.

Wellbeing and Lifestyle Coach Kelly-Marie Adams said: “Sport has a wonderful way of bringing people together, and this visit certainly did that. It was fantastic to see residents getting involved, sharing memories and learning about opportunities to stay active.

“We are incredibly grateful to Eastleigh FC Walking Football Club for taking the time to visit and inspire our residents.”

The event formed part of the home’s ongoing programme of activities, which supports residents to stay connected with local groups, enjoy familiar interests and take part in meaningful experiences within the home.
