Milngavie Manor residents take a journey through food, culture and memories

A few months ago, one of our residents shared how much he missed the comforting flavours of traditional South Indian food from his younger days. Wanting to bring back those cherished memories, our caring team surprised him the very next day with homemade masala dosa.

The reaction was unforgettable. His smile said it all. It was far more than just a meal - it was a treasured memory brought back to life.

Not long afterwards, we discovered that one of our most loved South Indian restaurants, Saravanaa Bhavan, was right here in Glasgow. When we mentioned the restaurant to him, he became excited at the thought of visiting and immediately began looking forward to the trip. Last week, we made it happen.

Residents enjoyed a special minibus outing to the restaurant, where the experience became about much more than food. Together, they explored the menu carefully, choosing dishes that they could enjoy. They loved tasting new flavours, but what made the day truly special were the conversations shared around the table.

They spoke about culture, childhood memories, and the way food has the power to bring families and people together. They also admired the beautiful statue of Lord Ganesha at the restaurant entrance, learning about its significance as a symbol of new beginnings and the removal of obstacles.

The outing even became a learning experience, with residents discovering how different foods can be combined to balance spice and enhance flavour.

At Milngavie Manor Care Home, experiences like these are a reminder that person-centred care is often found in the smallest details - listening to someone’s story, honouring their memories, and creating opportunities for joy, connection, and discovery.
