Cambridge Grove Residents Revisit Their Travels Through Art and AI

Cambridge Grove Residents Revisit Their Travels Through Art and AI

Residents at Cambridge Grove Care Home have been revisiting memories of past travels through a creative project combining art, conversation and modern technology.

The activity invited residents to choose a favourite destination they had visited and pair it with the style of a well-known artist. Using AI-generated images for inspiration, residents explored how different artistic styles could capture the feeling of places that had stayed with them over the years.

Travel Memories Brought to Life

The project gave residents at the Fulbourn care home the chance to reflect on holidays, adventures and special places from around the world.

As residents shared their chosen destinations, the group discovered that between them they had travelled to almost every corner of the world. The activity opened up conversations about different countries, favourite memories and the people they had travelled with, helping bring those experiences back to life in a relaxed and engaging way.

Each resident then created their own painted interpretation, inspired by their destination and chosen artist.

Inspired by Famous Artists

Resident Anna Caves, 86, chose Brazil as her destination, inspired by fond memories of holidays there. She selected the style of Monet to reflect the image she had chosen.

“I chose Brazil for my destination as I have fond memories of holidays there,” Anna said. “I thought Monet would suit the photo I chose, with the gentle colours and mottled appearance.

“It was fun having a go at painting my own version, although I wished I’d chosen an easier picture than Christ the Redeemer!”

The project encouraged residents to think not only about where they had travelled, but also how colour, texture and style can change the way a place is remembered and represented.

Keeping Memories Alive

Home Ambassador Amy Milburn said the activity had prompted many meaningful conversations among residents.

“Our residents loved talking about countries they’ve visited in the past and the memories they made,” Amy said. “It’s so important to keep those memories alive.”

Wellbeing Coach Andrea Murphy, who has a passion for art, enjoyed working with residents to explore different artists and styles.

“I loved sitting with the residents discussing their favourite artists,” Andrea said. “Together we thought about which artist would best suit each resident’s chosen destination.”

The activity was a thoughtful way for residents to share stories, revisit important memories and enjoy the creative process together.
