Dunstable Care Home Residents Embrace Nature Through Sensory Garden

Dunstable Care Home Residents Embrace Nature Through Sensory Garden

A garden designed for more than just gardening. At Caddington Grove on London Road, the garden has been shaped to offer more than a pleasant outdoor space. It has been carefully developed to support relaxation, connection and a sense of purpose.

Residents take part in planting, tending and simply spending time among the flowers, with many finding it brings a natural rhythm to their day.

Jack, who lives at the home, describes it as one of the highlights of daily life. Spending time in the garden gives him a sense of purpose while also offering a calm, peaceful environment to enjoy.

The garden has been designed around sensory experiences, with areas focused on scent, texture, colour and edible planting.

From brushing herbs to release familiar fragrances, to handling different plants and materials, each element encourages gentle engagement and often sparks memories or conversation.

This approach reflects a wider focus on wellbeing at Caddington Grove, where daily life is shaped around individual interests and meaningful activity.

To ensure all residents can take part, the team has also introduced a mobile garden trolley. This brings plants, flowers and materials indoors, allowing residents to engage in their own time and in a way that suits them.

It has created more opportunities for one-to-one interaction, particularly for those who may find it harder to access the outdoor space.

Moments like these often lead to conversation, shared memories and a quiet sense of enjoyment that carries through the rest of the day.

The garden is now being entered into the Dunstable in Bloom competition, reflecting the time, care and creativity residents have invested.

It’s a simple but meaningful way to celebrate what has been created together, and to share a small part of daily life at the home with the wider community.
