Residents, families, friends and team members from Chawley Grove Care Home came together for a colourful sponsored walk in support of Dementia Action Week.
The Cumnor Hill care home organised a light-hearted ‘tortoise and hare’ themed walk to raise awareness of dementia and support the work of Dementia UK. The event brought plenty of smiles to the local community and raised £352 for the charity.
The sponsored walk was organised by the team at Chawley Grove Care Home and brought together residents, relatives, friends and members of the wider community.
Adding to the fun were Steve Wheeler and Marak James from StAges Theatrical, who joined the walk in larger-than-life costumes. Their tortoise and hare theme helped create a cheerful atmosphere, attracting attention from local residents as the group made its way along the route.
Marak James, who took on the role of the tortoise for the day, said the event had been “incredible” and shared how much StAges Theatrical enjoys being part of activities at Chawley Grove.
“We are always thrilled when Chawley Grove asks us to be part of their events, and this one certainly didn’t disappoint,” he said. “Seeing the staff, residents and their families get involved for this great cause was amazing. And for me, as the tortoise, it was a great feeling to cross the finish line before the hare did!”
The walk was held as part of Dementia Action Week, helping to raise awareness of dementia and the importance of supporting people living with the condition, along with their families, friends and carers.
For the team at Chawley Grove, the cause is especially meaningful. As a care home that supports residents with different needs, the team understands how important it is to approach dementia with patience, understanding and respect.
Danni Hudson, Wellbeing Lead at Chawley Grove Care Home, said events like this help encourage conversation and understanding.
“Working at a care home makes us very aware of the impact dementia has, not only on those living with the condition, but also on their families, friends and carers,” she said.
“Events like this are so important because they help start conversations, raise understanding and remind people that those living with dementia are still able to enjoy meaningful experiences, social connections and moments of joy.
“The support we received from residents, relatives, friends and our partners at StAges Theatrical was fantastic, and we are so grateful to everyone who helped make the day such a success.”
Thanks to the support of everyone involved, the sponsored walk raised £352 for Dementia UK.
The day reflected the strong sense of community at Chawley Grove, with residents, families, team members and local partners all playing a part in supporting an important cause.
