A resident at Nesbit House in Orpington is taking on an inspiring Everest-themed walking challenge to raise money for Teenage Cancer Trust following her radiotherapy treatment.
Margaret, known to everyone as Maggie, first became involved with Teenage Cancer Trust years ago when she completed a trek to Everest Base Camp to raise money in support of her grandson, who had been diagnosed with leukaemia.
Now aged 92, Maggie has decided to reconnect with that challenge once again, with support from the wellbeing team at Nesbit House.
Following the end of her radiotherapy treatment, Maggie wanted to focus on becoming more active and rebuilding her mobility. Together with Wellbeing Lead Iestyn, she began an independent walking challenge inspired by her original Everest journey.
Maggie initially set herself a goal of walking the equivalent distance from Everest Base Camp to the summit by completing daily step targets and tracking her progress each day.
What began as a personal goal to stay motivated soon became something much bigger.
The team at Nesbit House created a JustGiving page alongside a donation point within the home to help support Maggie’s challenge and raise money once again for Teenage Cancer Trust, the same charity that meant so much to her family during her grandson’s illness.
Since beginning the challenge, Maggie has already surpassed her original target and decided to continue walking to help raise even more money for the charity.
Her story has already gained support from Teenage Cancer Trust, with the charity offering to help celebrate Maggie’s achievement later this month.
The team at Nesbit House have also been joined by the wider Hamberley Care Homes community, with Hamberley matching Maggie’s initial £500 fundraising target in support of the challenge.
Speaking about the fundraiser, the team at Nesbit House said Maggie’s determination has been inspiring to both residents and team members alike, with many following her progress and cheering her on each day.
