Two adventurous care home colleagues are preparing to swap their desks for the skies as they take on a charity skydive to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society.
Sarah Phelps and Maddie Hewer, who both work at Meryton Place Care Home, will take part in the jump on 23 May – Dementia Action Week - hoping to raise thousands for the charity, which supports people affected by dementia.
Business administrator Sarah said: “It still doesn’t quite feel real, but I’ve always believed in stepping outside my comfort zone.
“This is definitely one of the biggest challenges I’ve taken on - jumping out of a plane is no small thing - but knowing it’s for such an important cause makes it completely worth it.”
Receptionist Maddie Hewer said their motivation came from seeing first-hand the impact of dementia. She added: “Working in a care setting, we see how much of a difference the right support can make, not just for residents but for their families too. Alzheimer’s Society does incredible work in providing guidance, reassurance and practical help at some of the most difficult times in people’s lives.”
So far, the pair have raised £1,121, with donations continuing to come in ahead of the big day. As part of their fundraising efforts, the Bath Road care home also hosted a ‘Splat the Nat Day’, where Home Manager Natalie James volunteered to be soaked for donations.
Natalie said: “We’re incredibly proud of Sarah and Maddie for taking on such a bold challenge. Their enthusiasm has really brought everyone together. I wanted to support them in my own way, although I’ll admit, I’m much more comfortable staying on the ground!”
The Alzheimer’s Society offers various support services including a national helpline, expert advice and local support groups. It also funds research and campaigns to improve care, and raise awareness.
Sarah added: “Every donation, no matter the size, helps make a difference. If jumping out of a plane gets people talking and helps support families affected by dementia, then it’s a leap we’re proud to take.”
