A talented knitter who hasn’t picked up her needles for 40 years has found a new love for the hobby as part of a poppy-themed community project.
Margaret Wellman, who lives at Hindhead Place Care Home on Portsmouth Road, became involved in a special friendship project run by Lindford Methodist Church.
She and her fellow residents were tasked with knitting over 150 poppies to form a part of the church’s ‘Friendship Day’ display.
However, Margaret got so into knitting again that she made 130 flowers herself.
Margaret said: “It was an honour to knit so many poppies for a good cause.
“This is the first time I have knitted in 40 years and my goodness, I enjoyed it so much I ended up knitting 130 poppies. I think I have become quite addicted to knitting!”
Church leader Carolyn Strankalis and Knit and Natter Club leader Delise were delighted by Margaret’s contribution and the 30 other poppies made by residents at Hindhead Place.
Delise said: “We are astounded at the hard work that the residents have put into the poppies, and we are so delighted that the Knit and Natter Club at Hindhead Place is so popular.”
