Residents at Upton Manor Care Home in Poole recently enjoyed a vibrant Caribbean-themed celebration, bringing colour, music and shared memories into the heart of the home.
The day was inspired by resident Beryl Phillipson, whose lifelong love of travel sparked conversations about favourite destinations, cultures and experiences. Beryl and her late husband David spent time living abroad, including in Hong Kong and the United States, and travelled widely throughout their lives. Caribbean cruises and sunny climates were among her most cherished memories.
Reflecting on the celebration, Beryl said:
“I’ve always had itchy feet. We were lucky to see so many beautiful places and experience different cultures. Today has brought back so many happy memories.”
Beryl has documented many of her travels in a personal scrapbook filled with photographs, notes and stories, which she often shares with fellow residents, creating opportunities for conversation, reminiscence and connection.
To capture the spirit of the Caribbean, the home was transformed with tropical decorations, relaxed island music and themed activities. Residents enjoyed mocktails, beach-inspired games and the chance to reminisce together in a cheerful, sociable setting.
Wellbeing and Lifestyle Coach Erin Butcher explained:
“Moments like this are about much more than the activity itself. They help spark memories, encourage conversation and strengthen the sense of community within the home. It was lovely to see everyone so engaged and enjoying the atmosphere.”
Events like this form a regular part of life at Upton Manor, supporting wellbeing, social connection and meaningful daily experiences alongside the home’s residential, dementia, nursing and respite care in Poole.
