A meaningful wish recently came true for residents at Hindhead Place Care Home in Haslemere when Morys and his partner Jo were given the opportunity to experience the traditional art of Chinese brush painting and calligraphy.
Jo has long had an interest in the art form and has been a member of the Chinese Brush Art Society for many years. After hearing how much the experience would mean to them both, the team at Hindhead Place arranged a special workshop at the home so they could explore the art together.
Angela Reich, Chair of the Chinese Brush Art Society, kindly led the session, guiding residents through the techniques involved in this centuries-old discipline known for its precision, balance and expressive beauty.
Morys described the experience as fascinating and rewarding.
“It was absolutely amazing and far more challenging than it looks,” he said. “Every line has meaning and you really have to concentrate, but with Angela’s guidance we achieved some incredible results.”
Jo added that the opportunity to finally try the art together was both calming and deeply enjoyable.
“It’s such a fine art and you can’t rush it,” she said. “That’s what makes it so special. This is something we have always wanted to do, and to finally experience it together was very moving.”
The workshop not only fulfilled a long-held wish for the couple but also gave other residents the chance to observe and learn about a traditional art form, adding to the creative activities that form part of daily life at Hindhead Place.
Wellbeing Lead Janice Bayer said the session created a peaceful and reflective atmosphere for everyone involved.
“There’s something very calming about this art form,” she said. “You slow down, focus your mind and let the brush do the talking. It was a wonderful experience for everyone here and a lovely example of how shared experiences help bring people together.”
