Anne, 101, meets British Army pair to share her wartime memories

Two Army engineer reserves made VE Day celebrations extra special for 101-year-old Anne Thomson when they visited her East Renfrewshire care home.

Sappers Andrew Robin and Spencer Smythe stopped by Newton House Care Home, North Greenlaw Way, to mark the special occasion and enjoy a community party.

Resident Anne, aged 101, served in the Women's Royal Air Force for four years during the Second World War. Her brother Arthur Bell tragically died in 1942 whilst serving with the RAF.

She said: “It’s very important that we pay attention on VE Day and think about those who lost their lives as well as the brave people who serve today.

“It was lovely meeting Andrew and Spencer and hearing about their time serving in Cyprus and about their upcoming tour to Germany.”

Anne remembers her VE Day back in 1945 when she lived in Wick, Caithness, the far north of Scotland.

Anne added: “I was excited to be alive and have the opportunity to share my stories and memories in the future.”

The home also opened its doors to friends, family and the community for the celebration which included entertainment from local performer Jamie Walker who played a selection of wartime classics.

Wellbeing and Lifestyle Coach Kerry-Anne McDade said: “It was a fabulous day, with attendees travelling from different areas of Glasgow after hearing we were holding a VE Day celebration.”
