Residents at Elstow Manor Care Home in Wixams, Bedford recently braved the rain to spend time refreshing the home’s raised flower beds, preparing the garden for the colourful months of spring ahead.
Undeterred by the weather, residents rolled up their sleeves and worked together planting a wide variety of flowers, enjoying the fresh air and the satisfaction of creating something that will continue to grow and bloom in the weeks ahead.
Resident Anne Poole, aged 91, said she particularly enjoys the opportunity to spend time outdoors.
“There is nothing quite like being outside enjoying the fresh air,” she said. “It’s also a lovely way to keep active, and it’s wonderful to see something you’ve planted starting to grow.”
Residents planted tulip bulbs, dwarf daffodils, cyclamens, winter heather, polyanthus and primroses, creating displays that will bring colour and scent to the garden throughout the changing seasons.
Wellbeing and Lifestyle Coach Oliver Waddington explained that gardening activities offer many benefits for residents.
He said that digging, planting and caring for the flower beds encourages gentle movement while also providing a meaningful and enjoyable activity. Spending time in the garden can also help boost mood and support overall wellbeing.
The results of the residents’ efforts are already beginning to appear, with existing bulbs such as hyacinths, tulips, daffodils and snowdrops starting to break through the soil.
At Elstow Manor, activities like gardening are an important part of daily life, helping residents stay active, enjoy time outdoors and take pride in the shared spaces around the home.
