Residents at Dorking Manor Enjoy a Caribbean-Inspired Day at Sea

Residents at Dorking Manor Care Home recently enjoyed a taste of the Caribbean, as the home’s team transformed the day into a cruise-themed experience designed to lift spirits, spark memories and encourage connection.

Without leaving the comfort of the home, residents “set sail” on a tropical cruise, enjoying Caribbean-inspired music, colourful mocktails and relaxed conversation, creating a warm, uplifting atmosphere during the winter months.

Sharing memories and meaningful moments

The themed day gave residents the opportunity to reminisce about past holidays, favourite destinations and shared experiences, with many recalling cruises taken earlier in life.

Respite resident David Turner described how the afternoon brought back memories of travelling with his wife, from the anticipation of boarding a ship to meeting new people along the way. He shared that the experience helped him reconnect with moments that had brought joy and excitement in the past.

Resident Margaret Mason also enjoyed the day alongside her daughter, Cathy. Together, they reflected on Margaret’s past travels, with Cathy describing the experience as a meaningful way to share something new with her mum while revisiting cherished memories.

Supporting wellbeing through thoughtful experiences

The event was organised by Dorking Manor’s Wellbeing and Lifestyle team, who regularly create themed activities to support emotional wellbeing, social connection and a sense of purpose.

Kirstyn Box, Wellbeing and Lifestyle Coach at Dorking Manor, explained that winter can feel quieter and more challenging for many people, and that bringing warmth, colour and shared experiences into the home can make a real difference.

By creating immersive days like this, the team aims to encourage conversation, laughter and positive anticipation, helping residents feel engaged and supported throughout the year.

Resident Vera summed it up simply, sharing that a little sunshine and fun can go a long way in lifting the spirits.
