A day of culture and celebration was enjoyed when members of Bristol’s Hong Kong community gathered at Lovell Place to mark the Lunar New Year and welcome the Year of the Horse.
The group visited Lovell Place Care Home, Sparrowbill Way, where they spent time with residents sharing stories, traditions and personal memories of how the festival is celebrated in Hong Kong.
Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is one of the most important dates in the lunar calendar. Celebrations traditionally include family reunions, special meals and red decorations symbolising good fortune.
The Year of the Horse is associated with energy, strength and determination.
Balloon model artist Terrence and his friends joined residents to demonstrate how to make balloon flowers and he created a balloon horse to commemorate the year of the horse and crafted a beautiful balloon arch.
For the occasion, the home transformed its bistro area into a vibrant sea of colour, decorated with traditional red and gold ornaments to reflect the spirit of the festival.
Residents enjoyed learning about the zodiac, tasting themed food and enjoying a Chinese take away supper in the evening.
Lovell Place Wellbeing and Lifestyle Coach Vicky Green said: “It was a warm and engaging occasion, made all the more special by the kindness and generosity of our local community.”
“Our residents loved hearing about the traditions and asking questions about how the New Year is celebrated in Hong Kong.”
