Verwood House Hosts Community Discussion on Tackling Loneliness

Verwood House Hosts Community Discussion on Tackling Loneliness

The profound impact of loneliness on health and wellbeing was the focus of a thought-provoking roundtable hosted at Verwood House Care Home in Dorset.

The event brought together more than 20 local organisations in a shared commitment to reduce loneliness and strengthen community connections. Organised as part of the Crane Valley Primary Care Network’s Community SWITCH programme, the discussion included representatives from GP surgeries, patient participation groups, LiveWell Dorset, Dorset Council, the South West Advocacy Network, and other local partners.

Together, delegates explored how loneliness contributes to serious health conditions such as depression, anxiety, weakened immunity, heart disease, and cognitive decline, including dementia.

Event organiser Andy Saunders from OMNIsector highlighted the urgency of the issue:

“Loneliness isn’t just an emotion – it’s a serious public health issue that can damage mental and physical wellbeing while leaving people open to exploitation.”

The event helped forge new partnerships and a more joined-up approach between healthcare providers, charities, and community organisations.

“As a direct result of the event, we now have a cohesive and long-term way forward,” Andy added.

Guest speaker Damian Cranny, Fraud Protection Officer from Dorset Police, addressed the increased risks faced by isolated individuals:

“Fraudsters often target people who are simply looking for connection.”

Jo Morris, Assistant Clinical Director of the Primary Care Network, issued a clear call to action:

“By working together, we can build stronger networks to help people make meaningful connections while protecting them from harm.”

Reflecting on the day, Verwood House Home Manager Julie House said:

“It’s inspiring to see so many people coming together to tackle loneliness in our community. This kind of collaboration and compassion is exactly what makes initiatives like Community SWITCH so impactful.”
